Platinum Izumo Fountain Pen. This pen truly shows the unique skill of Japanese artisans as it is made using both Raden and Urushi techniques.
Shiny particles of fine mother-of-pearl are placed on the ebonite body of this pen one-by-one by a maki-e artist. The Raden technique is a traditional decorative technique that is mostly used for decorating the Urushi works. A Japanese artisan uses a very delicate thin peel of mother-of-pearl inlays, each shell is selected and placed on the pen finding its best angle with the most sparkle.
This is then given a finish of Urushi lacquer – the black colour of the lacquer has been chosen for this pen to expresses the depth of the universe. Urushi is a natural lacquer and five coats are each painstakingly applied, allowed to harden and polished in turn. A final coat is wax-polished, rubbed with pulp paper and oil polished - all repeated multiple times. This process takes over 4 months and the resulting rich, deep finish is highly prized and can be seen on many Japanese craft pieces.
The barrel of this pen is made from ebonite. Gold plated clip and black resin grip. The 18k gold bi-colour nib is the usual supreme Platinum quality. Available in medium and broad.
The Izumo is presented in a wooden giftbox imprinted with the Izumo logo and includes a special fabric pen pouch. Please note that the pouch may differ in design from what appears in the photograph.
Supplied with a converter for use with bottled ink. Platinum recommends Platinum Fountain Pen Ink, though of course any quality bottled ink can be used. Also takes Platinum ink cartridges. Supplied with 1 blue-black 30ml bottle of ink and 1 blue-black cartridge.
154mm long, 18mm diameter and 34.5g in weight. Platinum recommends that you do not post the cap on the barrel when writing as this can damage the lacquer.
