Luxury Rollerball Pens

For luxury pens, rollerballs have long been a popular choice. They're often said to combine the smooth writing of a fountain pen with the convenience and reliability of a ballpoint - the best of both worlds.

A rollerball pen uses liquid or gel ink, with liquid ink being most popular for high-end pens. This is combined with a smooth ball, so the ink can flow easily when the tip touches the paper. In comparison, ballpoint pens use a paste ink, with a rough ball to pull the ink out onto the paper. As good as modern ballpoints are, a rollerball will feel smoother, with a freer flow of ink, much more like a fountain pen in use.

Rollerball pens are almost always capped, which makes them resemble fountain pens even more, so when a pen range includes both, it can be impossible to tell them apart until you take the cap off.

Fine Writing Rollerball Pen FAQ

What features should a high-end rollerball pen have?

The real question here is what features you are looking for, because you don't necessarily want the same things other people do. Luxury rollerballs are often a bit heavier than more basic pens, but lighter pens are available too, if that's what you prefer.

Any luxury pen will, of course, be refillable, and some use standard types of refill - this can be a benefit if you're fussy about how your pen feels on paper. If you don't love the standard refill it's supplied with, you'd be able to try other options to find one that feels just right for your taste.

How should I store my expensive rollerball?

Rollerball pens are generally not too fussy about how they're stored, though you shouldn't let them get too hot or cold. For luxury pens, you may want to protect them from scratches, especially if they're going to be living in a pocket or bag. A nice pen case can keep your pen safe, while still looking good - we do, of course, have a wide range of pen pouches and cases.

What are some of the top brands that make luxury rollerball pens?

Montblanc is probably the most famous and recognisable brand for luxury pens, but there are many other great pen brands, including Pelikan and Graf von Faber-Castell from Germany, and Visconti for some Italian design flair.
