Do you need special pens for calligraphy? Well, yes and no. You certainly don’t need one to get started, you can have a go at calligraphy with whatever pens or pencils you have around. If you need thicker strokes, draw them and fill them in. But there are types of calligraphy that are very difficult to achieve without the right pens, and many other types that can be made much easier.
Blackletter or Old English scripts, with very thick and thin strokes, can be very tricky to do without a very wide italic nib. Modern calligraphy styles, with their more flowing thick and thin lines, can be much easier done with a flexible nib.
So don’t let the lack of the right pen put you off if you want to have a try at calligraphy. But if you want to make it easier, or you’ve tried it and want to get better, we’re here with the right tools for the job.
