0.4mm pencil lead is popular in Japan, where it's seen as a good compromise between the fineness of 0.3mm and the sturdiness of 0.5mm. It's not normally available in Europe as there is not a single 0.4mm mechanical pencil in any manufacturer's European catalogue.
