Float like a butterfly. Sting like a bee. Montblanc's Great Characters series pays tribute to arguably the greatest boxer to ever grace the Earth.
A once in a generation gifted athlete and humanitarian, Muhammad Ali won his first heavy weight championship at the age of just 22 and would go on to hold the title another two times. Renowned in the sporting world for his strength, agility and skill, he was also widely regarded as one of the most influential humanitarians of the 20th century, working towards equal rights for black people all over the world. He famously campaigned against apartheid in South Africa and made a speech in front of the United Nations in 1978.
Made from precious resin, the black barrel is patterned to represent the tape boxers often use to wrap their hands. The cap is intricately designed. The first thing that will catch your eye is the shape. It's designed to look like a punch bag but on closer inspection, you'll find different elements making reference to Ali. A butterfly is imprinted to the pen, taking inspiration from his famous boxing style: 'float like a butterfly, sting like a bee'. The pointed cone makes a nod to the ring itself with four lines representing the ropes of a boxing ring.
The inscription along the cap makes reference to his victory in 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome and his first heavyweight world championship win in Miami in 1964. The details of that victory can be found on the cap ring, namely his seventh round technical knock-out. In celebration of his first title, the Montblanc emblem can be found in white resin which is adorned with a 1. Finally, the pocket clip is designed to represent a championship belt which bears Ali's name.
The nib is made by hand from Au 585 yellow gold which bears an engraving of a boxing glove.
Presented in a luxurious Montblanc gift box.
