The Platinum Pro-Use series is designed as the name suggests for professional drafting purposes. The 171 model includes a couple of features that enable the user to obtain the writing feel of choice.
Firstly, it employs the Safety Slide Mechanism, which is also used in the Press Man and OLEeNU pencils, and means the lead is supported much nearer the tip than most mechanical pencils. This means the lead is less likely to break if the pencil is knocked or dropped, and it can be used right down to the last millimetre.
Secondly, it employs the 'Snork' system. We're not quite sure why it's called this, but while the Safety Slide maximises lead protection, it has the added effect of making for quite a hard feel when using the pencil. This is fine when using templates and creating detailed drawings and so on, but may not be what you want when you're writing notes. Enter the Snork system. Rotating the tip of the pencil enables you to change the length of the lead pipe, which determines how close the lead is to the tip of the pencil. Then, by rotating the body of the pencil while holding the grip area, you can turn the cushion function on or off. Small adjustments to both mechanisms means you can create your own unique feel to the pencil.
The barrel is constructed from ABS resin with a chrome pocket clip. The taper and knurled grip area are chrome-plated brass. There is a lead grade indicator running from 2B to 4H incorporated into the push button. Refill with 0.5mm lead.
Dimensions: 145mm long, 10mm grip diameter, weighs 22g.
