Each limited edition of Graf von Faber-Castell's Pen of the Year commemorates a culture that has inspired and shaped the history of humankind. They are not only pens, but remarkable works of art.
The Pen of the Year 2023 is inspired by the Ancient Egypt, their deities, tales and achievements. Arguably the most famous ancient civilization to ever exist, Ancient Egyptian history dates back over five millennia with the earliest recorded history starting around 3100 BC and spanning almost 3000 years. Their history and culture still inspire to this day with much being handed down to us by the Ancient Egyptians.
Hieroglyphics were the Ancient Egyptian means of writing. Through the use of elaborate characters, they were able to record their history and leave clues to their culture 5000 years later, a true statement to the importance of written history. A fitting theme for this year's pen of the year!
Let's start with the barrel: It's all metal with a matt black and coated with highly resistant diamond-like carbon. The barrel is engraved with 12 series of hieroglyphics separated by a line for each row representing 12 deities from ancient Egyptian culture. Each pen comes with a brochure containing little more information on each deity, but from the top down, the names of Ptah, Osiris, Horus, Re, Isis, Nephthys, Seth, Anubis, Thot, Neith, Sachmet and Aphophis feature.
The barrel's end features a small metal plate, plated with 24-carat gold which is engraved with the Eye of Horus - a symbol used as a sign of prosperity and protection. The end piece is engraved with the lotus symbol, with the lotus flower symbolising creation and rebirth to the Ancient Egyptians.
Moving on to the cap which features a pinstripe design and is designed in the shape of the Nefertiti's cap crown. It's made from the same material as the barrel, comes with a sturdy pocket clip and features the same highly resistant diamond like carbon coating as the barrel. The end piece shows off reconstructed lapis lazuli engraved with the scarabaeus symbol.
The grip section is features a prominent 24-carat gold plated and blue lacquered ring design. The colours selected are the same as the death mask of Tutankhamun.
Each pen is individually numbered: there are only 125 available worldwide. Supplied with a black rollerball refill in a stunning polished black wooden box, it comes complete with a brochure and certificate of authenticity.
