Luxury Mechanical Pencils
There's no reason to do without a bit of luxury when things are only being pencilled in, and taking notes with pencil can be a very sensible choice - you can make corrections if you need to, but when it isn't intentionally erased, pencil is very permanent - it's just graphite on paper.
A lot of the best luxury pen ranges include a mechanical pencil, often closely resembling the ballpoint version of the same range. So it doesn't matter if you just sometimes need to pencil something in, because you know plans could change; or prefer pencil for your notes; you can still have a bit of luxury.
The lead you use can change the writing feel too, so it can be worth trying a different type of lead refills - softer grades, like B or 2B, will give a smoother feel on the paper, and write a darker line, but at the expense of having to extend the lead a bit more often. Harder grades, like H or 2H, will stay sharper longer, and need less 'clicking', but they'll write a paler line.
Fine Writing Mechanical Pencils FAQ
What features should a high-end mechanical pencil have?
It's really about what features you want, to suit your preferences. If it's going to be in a matching set with a pen, your choice could be made by that. Otherwise, look for an eraser if you want one handy - but if you erase a lot, a separate eraser might be better anyway. Twist-action is more common than buttons, but you might want to look for a push-button action if you prefer speed over being more pocket-safe. And of course, lead width - most luxury pencils are made for writing and scribbling, usually with 0.7mm lead, so check the width if you prefer something thicker or thinner.
What are some of the top brands that make luxury mechanical pencils?
All the main luxury pen brands also make pencils, including Montblanc, Graf von Faber-Castell and Pelikan. For a real classic pencil experience, you might also want to look at Yard O Led, still making their pencils in Birmingham, the same way they have for over 200 years.
What materials should a premium mechanical pencil be made from?
For a luxury pencil, you can probably expect either high-quality resin or metal, sometimes with beautifully decorated barrels.
