Luxury Ballpoint Pens

As much as we love fountain pens, the convenience and reliability of a ballpoint pen is hard to beat, and there are some really lovely luxury ballpoint pens. Premium ballpoints generally use top quality materials, and are designed and made to very high standards, with attention paid to the design so they look good as well as feeling good in your hand. They might be made of premium metals, or natural resins, or even wood, often with a brass structure underneath for durability.

And modern ballpoint refills can feel really nice to write with - many of these pens will take standard refills, too, which gives you a good choice, so you can find something that really suits you.

These can be executive or designer pens, made to look impressive, usually in an understated way. In many cases, they follow the same design and styling as the manufacturer's famous fountain pens - you can have the ease of use of a ballpoint pen, but still have the prestige and luxury of a Montblanc Meisterstück.

Fine Writing Ballpoint FAQ

What features should a high-end ballpoint pen have?

The real question here is what features you are looking for, because you don't necessarily want the same things other people do. Luxury ballpoints are often a bit heavier than more basic pens, but lighter pens are available too, if that's what you prefer.

Any luxury pen will, of course, be refillable, and some use standard types of refill - this can be a benefit if you're fussy about how your pen feels on paper. If you don't love the standard refill it's supplied with, you'd be able to try other options to find one that feels just right for your taste.

Most luxury ballpoints are retractable, with many using a twist-action rather than a push-button. Again, this is a matter of taste - a button is faster, but a twist mechanism is safer from being accidentally extended in your pocket.

What are some of the top brands that make luxury ballpoint pens?

Montblanc is probably the most famous and recognisable brand for luxury pens, but there are many other great pen brands, including Pelikan and Graf von Faber-Castell from Germany, and Sailor, Platinum and Pilot from Japan.

How should I store my expensive ballpoint pen?

Ballpoint pens are generally not too fussy about how they're stored, though you shouldn't let them get too hot or cold. For luxury pens, you may want to protect them from scratches, especially if they're going to be living in a pocket or bag. A nice pen case can keep your pen safe, while still looking good - we do, of course, have a wide range of pen pouches and cases.

What materials should a premium ballpoint pen be made from?

Luxury ballpoints will usually be made from high-quality resins or metals, sometimes with finishes crafted with materials like wood or natural urushi lacquer.

Is a ballpoint pen good for signatures?

Ballpoint pens vary their line width with pressure more than rollerballs do, which can make them more expressive pens than you might expect. It can also add a bit of extra flair to a signature - a fountain pen may be the more traditional way, but ballpoint ink is usually more permanent, and there's nothing wrong with signing with a ballpoint!
