Handwriting is one of the main things you do with pens. So are all pens handwriting pens? Well, not really, it's a more specific category, it just picked up a slightly odd name, for reasons we'd explain if we knew!
So what does make a pen into a handwriting pen? It's really about the tip. A porous plastic tip seems to do the trick. Similar to a felt-tip, but using a firm plastic. They generally have quite a nice feel on paper, giving them some feedback rather than being super-smooth. Many people like writing with them, but they're especially popular for children learning to write, as that extra feedback on the paper can make the tip feel easier to control.
