Or 'colouring for grown-ups', which sounds so much better! What is it? Well, it's a mindful way of winding down and chilling out, while being creative at the same time. It's really very simple: you take a great quality colouring-in book, filled not with outlines of cartoon characters but really intricately-drawn illustrations, and colour them in with fineliners or coloured pencils. And, because you're a grown-up, you can blend, hash, colourwash and dot to your heart's content. All you need is that great quality colouring-in book and a set of top notch colouring pens or pencils, all of which you can find here. And if you want to learn more about colouring in for adults, there's everything you need to know here.

Adult Colouring FAQ

What makes it ‘adult’?

Most ‘adult colouring’ isn’t that sort of ‘adult’, it’s just colouring books, pens and pencils, aimed at adults. That might just mean a bit more quality than you’d usually want for the kids, or it might mean more intricate designs, aimed at more adult attention span.

Haven’t we grown out of that sort of thing?

You might have done. Well done you. But it’s a pretty nice and relaxing thing to do, and we all need a bit of time to relax and turn our brains off sometimes. And as XKCD said, “We’re grown-ups now, and it’s our turn to decide what that means.”

I’m going to save money on colouring books by relaxing in a nice warm bath instead

That’s not really a question. But that sounds pretty nice too. You do you.

What do I need to get started?

Oh, so this might be for you after all? Yeah, thought so. While a really nice set of artist-quality pencils and some fancy books will make it more enjoyable, there’s nothing at all wrong with at least getting started with some cheap kids’ colouring pencils and a printout of some colouring sheets from the web. The process is the important bit, after all, so don’t think it’s going to be expensive to get going. If you want to upgrade to some fancy stuff later, we’ll be here.
