While being a modern pen (and pencil), the Drehgriffel looks far in the past for its inspiration, back to the 1920s when LEUCHTTURM1917 were formed. The design of the pen comes from that time, and even the style of 'writing' used for the Drehgriffel name on the side of the pens comes from a style of handwriting popular at the time, but almost unused now.
The name translates to 'twist stylus', which is how the Drehgriffel works - a simple twist at the top extends and retracts the tip. The barrel is aluminium, with brass parts, giving the pen a very high quality feel in the hand. The combination of quality and style helped the Drehgriffel to win Red Dot design awards in 2020 and 2022, and the German Design Award Gold in 2021.
