Meet the Artist - Gav Bolt of High Boltage Customs

Bolt Banner

Gavin Bolt is the edgy genius behind one of our Penorama banners, which he created with his favourite marker - POSCA. He customises clothing, and you can see what he does here.

His work is a great example of the versatility of these markers, which can be used on pretty much any surface, from leather and fabric to glass, ceramics and even rocks. Anyway, what makes Gav tick?

CP: How would you describe your work?
GB: Definitely not normal and everyday art, it’s an expression and also a statement. And constantly pushing the limits!

CP: What got you into drawing?
GB: I have always been interested in art and always found myself doodling about.

CP: If you weren’t an artist, what was the back-up plan?
GB: This is my back up plan! I am a professional musician as a living , so art and fashion keep me busy in between commitments. And  it has definitely done that.

CP: What are your favourite subjects/topics to draw?
GB: Rock n roll, mayhem, leopard print... Loud and radical!

CP: Where do you get your ideas or inspiration from?
GB: It’s tricky to say really! A lot from music and attitude, I’d say. My biggest inspiration is a rock n roll jacket designer in New York called Christian Benner, who's generally loud attitude. But I’d say music is the biggest one.

CP: What are you currently working on?
GB: Now I can’t spoil the surprise!! Something lairy and loud as usual!

CP: How long does it normally take to complete a project?
GB: Depends really. When I look at it and go woooah!! Ok this is done!

CP: What are your top 5 pens/pencils?
GB: POSCA PC-5M and PC-7M, and YONO 1mm. And everything POSCA.

CP: What pen or pencil couldn’t you live without?
GB: POSCA!!

CP: Do you know when a work is finished or are you constantly tweaking?
GB: Always tweaking, but I know when it’s done!

CP: What work are you most proud of?
GB: All of it !

CP: What tips do you have for aspiring artists/designers?
GB: Let the creativity flow naturally. If you ain’t feeling it, don’t get frustrated. Inspiration will come to you in its own time!
