What’s the history of Kuretake?
Kuretake started as a company called ‘Watatani Shokai’, and was founded in Nara, Japan, in 1902. They originally made Sumi, which is a traditional black ink used in Japanese art. They still specialise in Sumi but have been branching out into other calligraphy inks and pens for decades.
What makes Kuretake different?
As an innovative brand, Kuretake has been making different products that artists have loved using for a long time. Despite that, they are very grounded in their traditional ink-making background. That means they have a long history of consistently high-quality products.
Recommended Kuretake products
The Kuretake Mangaka Flexible Drawing Pen is popular with manga artists and cartoonists. It’s not a fude pen, but the flexible tip has very similar properties. They are also resistant to both alcohol and watercolour markers, so they can be used with them without bleeding or smudging.
Zig has been a general Kuratake brand since the 1970s, and were designed to be an affordable option for stationery products. The Zig Kurecolor marker pens are a particularly popular range, especially the Twin Tipped markers, with a 6.5mm broad chisel tip on one side and a 1mm fine bullet nib on the other.
